Timber and Timber Products Care Guide

Timber and timber products require appropriate handling, storage and installation for durability and strength. Timber products such as ply boards are hygroscopic in nature – have a tendency to absorb moisture from the air. The climatic conditions in Fiji Islands differ by region, and the central division in particular has high humidity and rainfall compared to other parts of the country. Thus, this guide enlightens end users on the appropriate storage, handling, use and application of timber and timber related products.

Storing Timber on Site
It is generally advisable not to store timber at an open site, however, if storage on site cannot be avoided, then the following principles should be adhered to:

  • Wood based products should be stored sufficiently close to construction worksites to be convenient but in a location where they are secure and cannot be damaged by ongoing construction work
  • Timber or wood products should never be stored on site without protection. They must be stored under adequate cover, which should protect the product(s) from the weather but be sufficiently well ventilated to prevent condensation
  • Special arrangements will be needed for high value items or those dried to special moisture content
  • New building as a rule of thumb, is not a good place to store timber or boards, even for a few days. The atmosphere in it will be too damp until all concrete and plaster have had time to dry thoroughly unless the building is of timber frame construction in which there will be little or no use of wet trades
  • A shed or garage may be used for storing timber, but must be clean and well ventilated. Windowless lock-up garages or metal containers are not ideal

Ply Boards

  1. Boards should never be exposed to moisture
  2. Avoid storing near windows, doors or even open veranda where chances are likely for exposure to moisture easily
  3. Ply boards must not be placed directly on concrete floor/ unpainted concrete and tiles surface due to risk of moisture absorption. Illustration (a) below shows appropriate way to stack plyboards:

Recommended Paint Application: One (1) coat of primer and minimal of two (2) coats of finishing paints to be applied to the ply board before installation. Refer below recommendation from Paint Supplier:
Step 1 – Apply Primer: Resene Pink Primer
Step 2 – Apply Undercoat: Resene Sureseal Sealer Undercoat
Step 3 – Apply Topcoat depending on customer preference for end use

  1. Do not install boards against green (untreated)/ wet timber frames or noggins
  2. Guidelines for External Application
  3. Ply boards must also be painted on the back to prevent moisture absorption and water penetration
  4. Recommended Paint Application: refer steps 1-3 above
  5. All exterior boards that are fully exposed to elements of nature must be treated to H3 level for durability
  6. Edge sealing is critical for exterior boards. Refer to 4 above for recommended paint application
